About Supply Desk

Supply Desk have been operating since 2002 when we launched the first agency management recruitment services within education, for school groups in the UK. This was delivered in partnership with the London Borough of Harrow in 2002. The service was ground-breaking for the time and within the first 2 years, savings of over £1 million were made across the authority, and teacher retention rates improved by 70%. We’re proud of our history as innovators in Education and our vision to be recognised as such is reflected in the many ways we try to help schools find the right staff. We now have over 14 years of experience and our focus today is still on a fair price and a ‘never-compromise’ attitude to quality. To help schools raise standards we know we need to find the best talent and then create the right match.  We do this by getting to know each individual school, their staff, their pupils and culture before recommending the right candidate.

I worked through the Brighton/Hove Branch and there was ample work for me (usually 4 days per week minimum). Pay rates aren't fantastic, especially when you consider cost of living in Brighton is virtually the same as London, but they do pay more for primary than secondary. They seem to have the monopoly in the area, hence the amount of work, but this also means that you're more than likely to be sent to some pretty poor schools (of which there are quite a few in the area). You need to be very firm with the staff in this branch as they seem to be self-serving and care mostly about their own commission rather than your needs and will push you into doing what is best for them. At times I felt like I was being treated with contempt in quite a condescending and snide way. Wouldn't necessarily recommend them but as they are the largest agency in B&H area there isn't much choice if you are looking for a lot of work quite frankly.

The staff at the Hove branch are slovenly, unhelpful and disrespectful to the point of rudeness. They seem to be infected with an ideology that sees potential supply teachers as stupid and inferior beings.

I work through this agency but will not be after my current role ends, the Kent branch are terrible, pushy, rude and dishonest. Hays were better and Ive been speaking to Redbox who seem brilliant and they pay better and are honest about your tax not being part of the rate.

Although I have not rated pay as highly as the others, it is down to the clients as I know Emma and the team in Manchester do their absolute best to secure a good deal for me. I have never been out of work (unless I've wanted to be!). They try their best to match staff to the correct schools and always ask for feedback from teachers to help them learn more about the schools and their requirements. I would always recommend the Manchester branch - I'm sure the other branches are just as committed, but I've not worked for them :)

I worked with the Southampton branch for a year and had a lovely time. I was most impressed by the supportive staff who listened to any concerns I had and tried to rectify them. I never had less than 3 days a week of work.

Really supportive overseas team, offering a smooth transition from Australia to the UK. Having just graduated uni, moving to the otherside of the world was a difficult task and the staff at Synarbor Australia were empathetic and extremely helpful. When I got to the UK, this continued. My consultant called whenever she said she was going to and I had 5 days a week work - every week, before getting placed in a long term in a fantastic school. Great rates of pay and help when ever I needed it. Would highly recommend.

I don't understand some of the other posts, the office I deal with in Chapeltown, Sheffield is absolutely fantastic. I am paid at a great rate (way more than some other agencies), I am rarely out of work (the staff have worked hard to help me secure long term work), I have no grumbles.

This is my favouite agency due to the amount of regular work they get me. The pay is lower in daily rate terms but it is supplemented in petrol and lunch expenses making the net salary nearly the same as other agencies.

I dealt with the Brighton branch. They're friendly enough, and fairly quick to call when there was work available. I probably managed an average of one day a week with them, which is more than I got from Timeplan, from whom I got nothing, despite registering and paying for a CRB. My only criticisms would be that the school I got sent to were generally the same two awful academies. And despite responding to their queries re availability, they haven't found me work since October 2012. On the plus side, having read all the reviews, they do seem to have been written by teachers who have worked through the agency, rather than the agency itself (ahem, Timeplan)

Loads of underpaid work! You will work all the time and be pushed into being paid through an outside agency which costs you an additional 6% each pay. When you tell them you need time off, even in advance (2 weeks notice for 1 day off) they will question you and ask why you want this time off. I was told a completely different story regarding expectations when I applied from Canada. I was told you could easily book time off, a daily rate of at least £110 (I get £100). Go with Hays or Reed, much better experience and far better pay.

No work whatsoever so far this Spring term. Can only assume schools aren't using them. A few years ago they were OK, now worse than useless. No wonder the branch staff change more often than most ppl change their socks.

Quite impressed. The agency regularly finds me work. They sort out any problems with bookings with the minimum of fuss. It would be nice to get a few more bookings ahead of time, rather than on the morning itself, but for the moment it's fine. Supply Desk was my second choice and has ended up finding me the most work, while my first agency has yet to find me any.

Manchester Area- I have had nothing but trouble from this agency, having registered over 2 months ago I am still waiting for my CRB to come back. My £44 seems to have vanished into thin air and when I have called my contact at the Manchester office he has fobbed me off more than once. The rates of pay offered are attractive and the staff seemed personable and even likeable but that really doesn't matter when they lack the ability to do even the simple things effectively. I was offered one interview at an Academy in Oldham but because I refused to go because the school didn't correspond with my own ethics as a teacher (Options in Yr8 and GCSEs in Yr9) the agency seem to have lost interest in trying to find me work completely. This is completely at odds with the spiel I was thrown during the recruitment process of how I should be honest about where I will and won't work.

Made to register with Supply Desk by the Jobcentre (even though at the time I was registered with 4 others) as they advertise as though there are actual jobs. I've been registered with them for over a year and, despite informing them that I'm available, I haven't had a single day's work from them. I had to pay for a new CRB with them too. Not very honest when they advertise as if there's a job, instead of making it clear that they are just after signing up more teachers. Can't really comment on the quality of the schools as I haven't been to any!

Very good! I work for the Huddersfield branch and was offered work from the day my CRB cleared. I have had daily and half-daily assignments but one school then offered me my current long-term role. I have recommended the agency to various friends as I have been highly impressed with them.
