Good agency. They keep me busy. Sometimes they give me half days or lunch coverings. They do not have problem to work with other agencies. It is one of the agencies that never traded me and I felt that I progressed with them.

I came from overseas in September and was really looking forward to working in Bristol. The preperations were useful (webinars) with the issues there regarding housing – they claimed to help me find an apartment but no help was given. They promised me so much work but after 4 moths I’ve worked a total of 4 half days with protocol. They are constantly calling about availability, even after submitting it online, and promising work that never exists. I signed with a different agency and have already doubled my work in less than a week. One time Chris at protocol pre-booked me at a school, then cancelled while I was on the bus to work. Turn out my other agency has an exclusive agreement with that school so Protocol was booking me just so I was unavailable with the other agency. I told them I no longer wanted to work “for” them and they still call about my availability. I’m also confident that theres been a staffing change there of about 5 people. I find them very unorganized, they don’t communicate, they lie, and will abandon you. Please, follow these reviews about Protocol Bristol and choose a different agency.

I joined Protocol Leeds in Sept 16. I am an outsntanding teacher coming from an outstanding school with great references. I am very flexible and will accept work in any year group across a wide distance. I work for a different supply agency, who I joined at the same time as Protocol and who have managed to fill my week with work almost every week and pay much better. However in 4 months Protocol have not successfully secured me a single job, and in that time they have only actually offered two separate days work for me however on both days they only offered me the job at 8:15 and I had already accepted work through my other agency at 7:30.
While the staff come across well every time I speak to them to update my availability they ask me what age group I’d like to teach, how far I’m willing to travel, and what type of role I’d like- it concerns me that if they don’t already have this information then I can’t see how they would be able to find me appropriate jobs.

Currently I am registered with the Newcastle branch and I am overall not happy with the service, especially the pay or lack of!! This agency have tried to fob me off many of times with ‘trial days’ working for a school (teaching) and not getting paid whatsoever. A lot of work that does get given to me is hours away and at the last minute so I have to turn it down. When I actually do get work they don’t tell you exactly what the school needs, like needing to be there at a certain time protocol just tell you what lessons need covering and the pay is ridiculous! Most of the time I’m getting paid less than minimum wage, then when you tell them straight they say is a set rate of pay for the day. I have been ‘sacked’ by protocol before then a week later they’re ringing back up asking me to work. Since registering with protocol I’m now in debt, unable to pay my bills and my confidence as a teacher has been shot to shit. Cheers protocol.

Shocking experience being wooed overseas with false assurances of appropriate work and guaranteed work agreements to then discover there is barely any work, all at inappropriate schools for my level of training and last-minute calls where agency expects you to be at the school fifteen minutes later and to catch cabs but no reimbursement offered even though the pay rate they offer is pitiful.
Only pros are that they are efficient with paying the paltry wages and no issues with registration or with entering my availabilities.

Complete waste of time, DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH THEM!!!!!

Lack of communication and massively incompetent staff that politely nod their heads and agree with everything you say and then blatantly ignore it and pretend it never happened. To them, you are not an individual with a life beyond their agency – they are only interested in filling their bookings and call you whenever they need someone for a booking, regardless of your availability or preferences.

After several weeks of getting up at 6.30 to wait for their call and not getting it, I called them up and was told that the contact number they have for me seems wrong, even though they had called me ON THE SAME NUMBER before, and I had called them from it as well. The next few weeks they kept calling me on the days that I wasn’t available, and never on the days that I was, despite me confirming my availability AT LEAST 3 TIMES and being told every time that there has been a mistake and they will update it right away.

At this point I decided that I didn’t want to work with them anymore and suspended my online account. I also called in to say that I have found another job and will not be available for work anymore. This happened six weeks ago, Protocol STILL CALL ME AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK, and despite me having said twice more that I am not going to work with them, they keep calling and texting me. Unbelievably unprofessional.

Absolute slime buckets. Gave me the complete run around. Surely they should know treating a teacher in a very shortage subject won’t end well being nasty. I’m now an assistant head teacher in a very large SEN company. After how they treated myself, I have now banned them from working for us. Well done because you acted like utter bells, you have lost 100 thousands of pounds in commission

I love Bristol Protocol. They are awesome guys and gals there, always cheery and bright, always ready to help. They are working at a million miles an hour every day in the office but there was always time for a little chat to see how i was doing (I supply with Sheffield Protocol now). Likewise, I’d pop in to say hi to everyone and replenish their chocolate supplies periodically. They are lovely people.

I worked for some lovely village schools. I still miss them now. Protocol knew where I liked to be and found me great positions on a regular basis.

It was always easy to work for them. Thanks everyone. Miss you 😃

When it came to work it was very sporadic, throughout the year I ended up with less than 50 total days worked with Protocol Bristol. They told me they had busy times and they booked me in advance, then things were cancelled that morning. Later found out they don’t even work with the schools they booked me into, they intended to cancel. Pay varied between 110 and 65 a day, I still don’t understand it. Dealing with the Bristol office was very difficult. I was affected by the E Coli outbreak, it hit me during period 1, I called and they (Chris Stone) told me to tough it out. The school helped me out though. They take a long time to answer calls and emails, over a week almost every time. They do have favourites, they’ve admitted to me they prefer candidates over others. They were very difficult to deal with most of the time. The company might be alright, but the Bristol office should be avoided and i regret not listening to other reviews.

I signed up with Protocol in Oz before i left to the Uk. all the staff i spoke to in OZ were kind and helpful and even offered my a job before i left – i ended up taking another.

All good or so i thought.

After a stint teaching in Cambridge i moved to Bristol. This branch was useless in dealing with my file. Asking me to fill out paper work i had already filled out in Oz.

I left the office after speaking to 4/5 staff members who all asked the same 3 questions and it was evident i was dealing with incompetence.

after i left i received an email days later asking for me to send in several documents that i had with me when i went in the previous meeting.

Since i have found several comments on the internet from fellow people venting their frustration at the incompetence of the Bristol office.

Unfortunate that they cant pull their fingers out and think about the people not the money

Signed with agency in Feb 2016. They sent my DBS away in March. In July my stage 4 had been completed. I contacted DBS to find out why it had not been printed and sent out, They advised that they had sent a letter to Protocol to confirm my new address as I had moved since starting application. I contacted Protocol to advise what I was told and they said no letter had been received. I contacted DBS again and was told the same thing and they also added that protocol can call them and advise them of my new address. Contacted protocol I called 3 different numbers and left a voice mail. I emailed all the staff that I had been in contact with and no response. A week later I got a email that my application had been cancelled due to no communication from Protocol. I called protocol about the situation and was told to email manager. Again no response, No apology, No Anything. I called today to find out when I can be expecting my refund as I have not heard anything from them in-regards to re-applying and they said they will sort it out. Still no apology. I waited over 5 months for DBS and now I have to find a new agency to start over with. Thanks for nothing Protocol (Finchley)

However, I was fortunate to be able to attend a CPD training seminar on ‘Child Protection and Safeguarding’conducted by Brian Todd which was absolutely fantastic. In a span of 2 hours we got a comprehensive and thorough idea on the topic with valuable guidelines for us as teachers. Congratulations on a great job! Thank You, Brian.

I registered with protocol -Wimbledon branch-in January and since then I’ve worked almost every available day. I was with other agencies before, but none gave me so much work, good schools, good communication and stability.
I get £130 and I have friends who get more from other agencies but I have seen that when they start to get paid better, the amount of work declines as new people come in and work for less.So far Protocol have helped with every single issue that I have encountered, mistakes or delays from schools, they pay on time and overall I have a smooth interaction. This is for Wimbledon branch, I have no experience of any other office.

My main gripe with Protocol is the pay department in the Tottenham Court London Branch. I’ve found them spectacularly unhelpful about a recent issue with my pay where too much tax was taken from my pay. Briefly; I shouldn’t have had tax taken at all, given the low amount of money I’ve earnt through P.A.Y.E. I only work in schools, through teaching agencies, a comparitively small amount of the time, my main income being as a self employed worker in another field. Errors inevitably happen with pay and tax of course, but what makes a difference is if the payroll department concerned is at least prepared to take responsibility for the mistake. Other than that I’d say Protocol is a fairly avaricious and aggressive company, who probably have a large number of schools who use them as first call. I would advise anyone working through them to check rates of pay and to be reasonably assertive. If you don’t ask you don’t get. Like other agencies, Protocol offers to direct workers who wish to be paid as self-employed to an umbrella company. I’m suspicious of this and, from my enquiries at least, haven’t found any justification for workers having to take on the extra expense of doing this. I’ve been self employed as an actor, registered with HMRC, for about 25 years. No fees to umbrella companies; I do my tax return at year end. Given the huge commission rate that teaching(as opposed to acting)agencies collect, I find it unfair that workers should effectively be financially penalized by this. It’s not due to any tax law, as far as I can see, but the business model of the agency

Plenty of work (in London) if willing to teach in both secondary and primary, and the rate of pay was better than other agencies, although I was told by another supply teacher a better rate was being paid elsewhere. On the whole the staff were very good, although occasionally I struck staff either on an ‘off’ day or their personality (due to immaturity) was at times condescending. Overall, a good agency and I would register through them again without hesitation.

Signed up from overseas under a guaranteed work agreement, covering me a minimal amount of pay, even if I dont work. Averaged working 2 days a week, and the guaranteed pay wouldn’t be paid until the end of the contract. After refusing to teach full time in a primary school, im am secondary teacher, they cancelled the agreement and refused to pay over 800 pounds. When I did work it was often at a reduced rate by 50%. They look for any excuse to not pay and blame you as a working. They did not provide feedback, positive or negative. Avoid the Bristol branch. Not well managed and poor service/help. I cannot afford a flight home because of all the money i spent to get here, and was assured pay. They say what you want until you are overseas.

This is in regards to the London branch. I have called them since July asking for long term work and was unsuccessful and asked for day to day work when the schools began. About Leeds office. Sneaky, dishonest and rude. They always sent me to schools at least 50 minutes away. They always called in the morning, I had never had a pre-booked day with them. When I was late, they sent me angry messages with exclamation marks, like I was a toddler that had just broken a vase!!
The schools were the worst I have ever been to, but they were always described as ”lovely”, at worst ”a bit challenging, but no worries”. I was very clear that I wanted to work only at primary schools but they kept sending me as a cover supervisor in secondary.
It was the first agency that I was registered with, and practically the first time I worked in British schools. They made my life really miserable, and I actually hated every single day. When I started working with other agencies, I realised that being a supply teacher does not always mean that you are an undermined, manipulated little person. AVOID.

I have been on the books with protocol for a number of years in their Leeds office, as well as being with other large agencies in the area like Randstad and Hays. And protocol is certainly the worst service and pay one can hope for I feel in the supply market as a teacher – I have been sent booking emails meant for schools showing their charge for my work at ‘£209’ per day, with my pay at just £130 – the sell/lie to me to pay me less, was that the school wouldn’t budge because of tight budgets. This in-turn means many of protocols most loyal schools who they offer work for, are sadly those that are more cost than quality conscious – meaning teachers are paid some of the lowest pay in the supply market for their experience level, and for that privilege they have to work in some of the toughest schools in the area.

Service from the office is poor-to-transactional, and often from different people who come and go from the office, seemingly on a 6-12 month cycle – this means the new sales people sell out new teachers who they meet, whilst the loyal hardworkers on the database just get forgotten about.

All in all the service from the Leeds office is some of the worst I have experienced from any sector of business I have made contact with in my life. And if it wasn’t for the huge and unfair money they make from each worker per day, I would certainly say protocol is on the way out as a Leeds agency.

    PROS:
    * I registered in Australia first and got everything sorted. I literally worked 4 days after arriving
    * Good consultants, both back home and in London
    * LOADS of work. Seriously. Heaps. I keep getting offered full time work but only want casual
    * Some pretty good schools and all close to home for me

    CONS:
    * Pay rates – i started on £130 per day and ended up on £160. I know some agencies paid more but like someone said below I got work 5 days a week and other friends who were with other agencies didn’t so it evened out
    * Got calls from heaps of different people. NOt a bad thing I suppose – they all offered me work – did get a bit frustrating as I only dealt with 1 person back home
    * Weather. I know they can’t fix it but it sucks.

So far I’ve been ignored and I’m very disappointed because I’ve worked with another branch for protocol and they always found me work. On that note the other branch sent me to a horrible school for a week without warning me of any kind! I think that was wrong but it’s typical. I really regret signing up with protocol because every branch is different but now things have gotten much worse! Including not working at all and being lied to again and again!

After reading some of the reviews on here I felt I had to do one myself to set the story straight. Most seem to be from grizzly British teachers so I think Protocol need a review from an overseas teachers point of view.

I signed up to Protocol when I was still in Sydney. I got everything sorted before I left and haven’t missed a day of work since arriving. So far I’ve worked in all parts of London and, mostly, the schools have been great. Some tough ones, some amazing ones, but just the same as home really.

Pay rates are good. From what other friends tell me some agencies pay higher but they don’t get work every day like I do so I end up making more money anyway.

Consultants are generally great. My Aussie consultant was super and helped with everything. The London teams have been good too.

Bank accounts, tax stuff, transferring money – it has all been taken care of. I can’t fault Protocol at all. The only bad thing is my visa only lasts for another 18 months so I’ll be looking for a way to stay in London!

Seriously – register with them before you leave Australia and you’ll be fine. London is amazing!

Unfortunately, my experience with Protocol has not been good. If you are working long term the amount of money they give you per day is not enough to support yourself, especially if you live in London.

Instead of negotiating some will exploit the vulnerability of you as an individual. I have had work where I spend £10 to travel a 2 hour journey only to receive £40. However, if you join other agencies you will have more power to negotiate. Just make sure when you get your DBS you add the update service so you can apply to more then one agency.

The schools or ‘clients’ are brilliant as with everything in life it is what you make it. Generally though, if you show passion, enthusiasm and respect the schools you will be greatly rewarded. When a teacher or someone tells you that you are really valuable to their school it is an amazing feeling.

Some of the consultants are friendly and understanding. They will help you.Build a relationship with them. Other consultants are psychopaths. I say this in the literal form because they will exploit you if they can in every way and will not care of the consequences. Cut throat business. Targets need to be made i guess. Out of respect I do not name names. You should aim to recognise who is good and bad as quickly as you can.

i was told their was no work for September but I know people who work as supply TA’s in protocol and they have been given offers. Even people who have never gone to a school yet and just registered! Reputation is important. if they don’t like you your done. If you make a mistake or an action they don’t like they will tell their workers at lunch time and your marked with a red flag. Even if you are valuable.

I attended a school to be told that I wasn’t needed. Funny because I had work from another agency that day but choose protocol out of ‘loyalty’. When asked why this happened I was simply told it was the ‘nature of supply work’ and wasn’t paid anything for their mistake. Recently a summer school I was working with asked why Protocol did not put me on long term on their school because they genuinely wanted me and instead were seeing new faces from protocol with people with no experience. It was there and then I realised Protocol is no the agency to be with.

DON’T JOIN THIS AGENCY. INSTEAD JOIN AT LEAST 4-5 AGENCIES WITH A GOOD REPUTATION AND DEVELOP A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH HONEST GENUINE CONSULTANTS. ALSO DO NOT BE TIMID, OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE EXPLOITED.

This is with regards to the Chelmsford branch. The staff are wonderful, friendly and personable and will do their best to sort any problems you may have. They take your circumstances regarding travel and length of work into serious account and will find you posts as close as they can to what you need/want.

I fully recommend the Chelmsford branch to anyone who is looking for a decent teaching agency. I’ve had tons of work through them and a fantastic experience all round.

This is about the Bradford branch, where I am registered. The people who work at the branch, especially Ed and Daley are both highly professional and highly personable.

To be honest, the only real issue I have with them is their pay rates. They are not competitive compared to other agencies, tending to pay £20-£30 per day less than others.

The thing is, though, I’ve probably had more work from them than through any other agency since I became a supply teacher. Personally, I can take a few days with lower pay so long as I’m working. There’s not a huge amount of difference after tax, anyway.

If you want personable people AND good rates of pay, you’re looking at the likes of Celsian and Provide. If you want to be kept working, Protocol (Bradford) are a good one to have on your side.

I appreciate some people have good experiences and others do not. However, I consider a big consideration when choosing a supply agency is whether after working for one term that the school you work for can take you directly onto their books and not have to pay an exit fee.

Unfortunately, Protocol Education do not offer this (they prefer to keep making money out of you and the school). For this reason I believe work seekers will do better to use other agencies in order to maximise their chances of securing long-term employment.

Protocol are a great agency. They are very personable and easy to communicate with. They have helped me find supply and contract work. They find work according to the area you are living so you don’t have to travel too far.

I found the best thing with Protocol is they assist in not only finding work for you, but assist in transitioning to another country to live. The pay rate is very competitive and the schools are a mixture of good and outstanding schools. I feel very supported by this agency and can recommend them to other teachers looking for work in the UK.

Protocol, Leicester are probably the worst agency out there. After promising you long term work for an accedemic year, they call you the day before you have to go to work and say the booking is cancelled. Not thinking that people have bills to pay and are relying on this as that’s what protocol promised. (That it will be on going). Ever since that, they have not found me any work. They never call me, I have to call them about fifteen times a day as they never return calls. Also, some members of staff are extremely rude!! It’s a disgrace. They do not care about their candidates at all. I am very unhappy with protocol education, Leicester.

We were in the process of moving to the Netherlands. While looking for jobs I stumbled across Protocal international. With excitement I contacted them and asked some direction about teaching in the Netherlands.

I have only had the same reply since the day I first contacted them: ‘I hope your well, we have sent your CV to several schools in the area. We’re just waiting on a reply at present.’ The latest response was: ‘Unfortunately I haven’t heard back from the schools I’ve even been to a conference with education leaders regarding work in the Netherlands and nothing seems to come back.’

We have now been in theNetherlands for 2weeks. I contacted an international school today, received an immediate positive reply. As it seems quite a number of documents is needed before you can actually start working. Requesting each of these documents will take up to 2weeks.

I am very disappointed in the service provided from Protocal. However I am aware that I have only been dealing with 1 consultant.

I have worked through teaching agencies in the past and have never had such poor feedback or action. If you give yourself out to be an international agent you must be aware of what is needed to start working internationally, so a list would have been very helpful as well as honesty!! It seems like from the start this agent kept me busy with empty promises. I would really like to know the reason behind this unsatisfactory service.

    AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!

What they are after is YOUR MONEY!

-FIRST they open you an account and make you apply through them for the DBS because they say ‘it’s faster’. YOU pay £44-£60.

-NB: During one of my visits I noticed a list of INCENTIVES they give to their staff: ONE DAY of LEAVE FOR EVERY 5 DBS’s!

This means THEY must really be making a PROFIT from bulk submissions of DBS applications! SO, BEWARE! They are not there to give you a job, in the first place.

-THEN, after you get the DBS, THEY DELETE YOUR NAME from their system and CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT, so when you try to log back into it you find that your ACCOUNT HAS BEEN SUSPENDED. (you may be ‘lucky enough’ to get hours at schools, but look up other commentators to find out how appealing this may be).

-When you call them to find out why your account has been suspended THEY PRETEND THEY CAN’T FIND YOUR NAME in their system.

-This was probably why that certain ‘Lesley Proctor’ from the Bristol Office couldn’t find ‘Michael Shaw’ in their records. Because THEY probably HAD carefully DELETED any trace of him from their system, and NOT because ‘Michael Shaw’ had mixed up the agencies in his mind! What an insolent answer indeed that of Lesley Proctor to Michael Shaw!(And how laughable of a manager to give highest rates to their own agency!!!).

    – Finally, after they have completed their ‘assignment’ of getting as many DBS application as possible so they can get their EXTRA LEAVE DAYS, their consultants avoid you on the phone, do not return your calls, do not answer your e-mails.

THE QUESTION IS (or rather SEVERAL QUESTIONS):

    – Aren’t agencies like this ACCOUNTABLE to any authority about the PRACTICES they use to make profits?

    – Is it ACCEPTABLE AND BEYOND SCRUTINY that they may use a procedure and an institution like DBS to make a profit, by prying on the money and hopes of unemployed people who are struggling to find a job? Financial organisations and educational intitutions do request a DBS AFTER THEY MAKE A JOB OFFER to you considering your qualifications and suitability for the job, and they may or MAY NOT CHARGE you for this.

    – Protocol Education claims to be a very profitable organisation. Do their AUDITORS care about the practices being used to make such profits? It is well-known that some businesses open ghost-accounts of ‘clients’ and ’employees’ to get state and other benefits, and when they pocket the money they close the respective accounts overnight:’clients’ and ’employees’ do not exist for them any more – in fact, they may have never existed.

-What is the ETHOS they nurture their OWN STAFF in? To lure and trick as many unemployed people as possible to apply for a DBS, so that THEY can get one or more EXTRA DAYS OF LEAVE, and then turn their back to the unemployed applicants and ignore them as if they never existed? WHAT A DISGRACE!

    – How do SCHOOLS accept to cooperate with agencies that use dubious practices in their recruitment process, or behave so impudently and derogatorily towards the teachers that apply through or are employeed by them?

PS: No need to commend on the insecurity and exploitation of zero-hour contracts, and the minimum-wage they pay to people with high-level academic qualifications and professional experience. Other commentators have already said enough on these matters.

I signed up with three agencies when looking at heading to the UK and while the other two agencies constantly called me saying they were working hard to get interviews for me, Protocol rarely called me. Instead, I was flooded with emails from all different Protocol branches offering me interview opportunities. Protocol was able to secure a long term position for me within a matter of months!

The Brisbane and UK teams at Protocol made it so much easier for me to pack up my life and move half way across the world. If you’re going to teach in the UK, teach with Protocol! I wouldn’t do it any other way!

However, I was always complaining about their rate of pay and the schools they sent me to. I got sent to some rubbish schools and my pay was crap!
Finally joined another agency and got sent to a nice school with better pay.

    Dear Michael Shaw,

RE: Review dated February 19, 2015 at 2:24 pm

I am very sorry you have had a bad experience and I’m disappointed to read this review. As I can find no record of a Michael Shaw registered on our database I am wondering if you have mixed up your agency names.

The Bristol branch is staffed by experienced professionals who care deeply about the level of service they provide. They are passionate about ensuring everyone who registers has a personal service and is matched carefully to the types of work they are seeking. The volumes of work both for teachers and support staff are incredibly high resulting in a large proportion of our staff been on guaranteed work schemes.

Please feel free to contact me directly via the Bristol branch to discuss any concerns you have.

Protocol Education made my teaching experience in London a real positive. All the consultants I spoke with over the two years from the signing up process to finally ending my time were professional and friendly. When I signed up in Australia, the consultant there made the whole process a lot less stressful and easy to understand. The induction meeting was also just as easy and laid back and it has been a breeze from there.

I felt at all times that I had the backing of the agency even when schools would get crazy! I always had consistent work and then when I was signed up to a full time job the team were really encouraging and happy for me. They are in constant contact making sure things are going well and when I was leaving they even wrote me a reference which I was grateful for.

Because of Protocol I got to experience a huge variety of London life in schools and I believe that this makes you a better teacher for it. When I am back in Australia I would recommend Protocol to anyone looking for a fabulous teaching experience overseas.

WOW! I am shocked to hear those who have seem to have had negative experiences with Protocol. It’s actually shocking because I have grown to feel as though Protocol is my Uk family.

From the beginning stages when I was thinking of coming over protocol was always in touch with me to answer any questions and concerns I had. I never felt like I was being too much. Having protocol behind me put me at ease as I finally made the move over here. They helped me with setting up a bank account, getting a sim card and phone number and everything else I needed before I started working the week after I arrived. I never had a problem with work some mornings I had over 10 calls with work. It has been such an easy job working with protocol. Their agents in particularly, Greg, Jaime, Lindsay and Rajia are so personable, in fact I easily found myself on the phone just chatting with them over an hour. They would call to check up on me and how I was finding the schools and living in London. It really makes anyone feel better moving to a new country alone.

I also want to mention how protocol put me in contact with other teachers coming over the same time I was. That really helped me make friends and having others in the same situation as me was helpful aswell. I highly recommend teachers coming over to the UK to come over with Protocol education. They even have a guaranteed work agreement for those more apprehensive people nervous about the amount of work you think you may get, however there has never been an issue of no work. I worked until the very last day of the school term.

whether you want long term, daily supply work, one to one interventions, they will always have the jobs available and don’t be afraid to tell them what you want, because they are all flexible.

I have friends who came over with other agencies and they can tell you horror stories. I am so thankful for coming across Protocol because every minute has been effortless with them and I have met amazing people through them.

I moved to the UK at the beginning of September, and Protocol has been there every step of the way. Not only have they provided us with supply work every day, they were extremely helpful with housing, banking, and everything in between. More specifically, Lindsay Gauthier (Protocol Coordinator) has been a phenomenal mentor and goes

I never registered with them because I got a really bad impression when I talked to the consultant over the phone. I am already working with some other teaching agencies, but according to this agency it was going to be hard to get me any work because I am foreign (I am looking to teach MFL). She asked me how many days I had worked as supply, and since I only started last September and have done few days she went on to ask in an incriminating way: “how do you support yourself then?” I have my own savings, but she has no right to ask where I get my money from. Really rude, disrespectuf and demeaning behaviour. I told her I wasn’t interested in registering anymore, I have other agencies call for me to register with them.

I advise everyone to not take this site too seriously. I feel like there may be a lot of fake reviews on here and that perhaps this site is managed by one agency in particular to promote itself and damage the reputation of others.

For that reason I wanted to submit an honest review of the agency I’ve been working with for the last year.

Let’s be honest, no agency is deserving of 10 out of 10. They are all private companies who are profit driven. Of course they charge the schools more than they pay us, that’s how they exist.

Protocol is no different and there are definitely some things that could be improved. Overall though, they have been very good and I have never been short of work. I work on average 4-5 days a week, in a variety of schools. Some are challenging (we’re in London afterall) but that’s not the fault of the agency. The consultants I work with have always been honest and will warn me ahead of time if a school is known for being difficult. I’ve worked with other agencies in the past and received a higher daily pay rate, but tended to work only 2-3 days a week so overall I’ve been better off with Protocol.

I believe teachers who post negative reviews are expecting too much. We would all love to earn £150 a day, 5 days a week, working in only outstanding schools! But we need to be realistic and accept that no agency can deliver that.

This agency is to be avoided for the reasons I will outline below. I have worked for this agency for over a year and have had numerous problems and issues.

Pay: this agency will use a number of tactics to get you to work for as little as possible. The major tactic is to tell you that your rate of pay is being dictated by the school and is out of their hands. This is not true and your day rate is completely negotiable and is out of the hands of the school.

One tactic is to say “the school only pays £80 a day for supply so thats all we can pay you” You have to remember that what the school pays the agency is a lot more than the agency pays you. They will never tell you what the school is paying them or tell the school what they are paying you. I had a lower limit of what I would work for and if the agency tried to offer me less I would just say no. Nine times out of ten they would call back and agree to the rate I wanted.

Tactic number two is to send you to a school on a day rate (no planning, marking etc) but the school would expect you to mark and plan. The agency would then say that the rate of pay is again being dictated by the school and there is nothing they can do about it. They would always back the school and you were left with the choice of walking or doing the extra work for free.

Tactic number three: guaranteed work scheme. This was offered to me and initially seemed like a good idea. They would guarantee four days a week minimum and pay me even if I didn’t work. Problems came when they started offering me work at less than the rate they had agreed. The contract stated that I could refuse work at a lower rate. They pretended they didn’t know about this and continued to offer me work at a lower rate. Remember this was a contract drawn up by protocol and the rate etc was offered to ME by THEM. All the time they were being very pushy and trying to make me feel like I was the one breaking the contract by not agreeing to the work.

Consultants: they seemed very friendly to begin with but to be honest I soon saw through this. They were very fake and overly friendly. They were awful at responding to issues and problems which were numerous. When it suited them you were “one of the team” but if you had an issue or problem you were ignored. There was a lot of dishonesty floating about basically.

I made a point of speaking to other supply teachers while in school and the general consensus from them was if they knew about Protocol then it was an agency to avoid. Some supply teachers were very surprised by the differences in pay.

You may be wondering why I stuck with this agency for so long and it was because they did actually find me work unlike a few other agencies I was registered with. Eventually though I became so frustrated with them I started working elsewhere.

Reading some of these reviews makes we wonder who the problem might be – the agency or the individual! I registered with Protocol before I left Sydney and the consultant there was fantastic. They let me know that the schools aren’t going to be like Hogwarts and that some schools are really going to be tough – I appreciated the honesty. In fact most of the schools I went to were great!

When I arrived in London the consultants there helped me get set up and I can honestly say that I always had work when I wanted it. They made it easy with everything and although the rates of pay were slightly lower than other agencies (only by a couple of pounds per day) they had 5 offices across London so I always had work close to home. I was happy to take £2-3 per day less if it meant 25 minutes less time spent on the tube each way to school.

I think some of the people commenting here need to look at themselves rather than the agencies. They are an employment agency after all (they need to get paid too!!) and it is your job to make sure you are a suitable candidate. Perhaps the reason you don’t get work is that you’re simply not a good quality candidate!

I can’t recommend them highly enough and of the 3 agencies that I registered with before I left Sydney they were the best (both before and after arriving in London).

Thanks Mitch in Sydney and Beth in London!

The one good thing about this agency is that they offered me regular work in a variety of schools. However their level of integrity is questionable. They would always say EVERY school was amazing (not the case) and disappointing when you are lied to repeatedly as it makes you distrust everything they say. They have often double booked me at schools without any regard for the fact that I had turned down work elsewhere to honour my agreement with them.
Although I have worked with them for over one year and been promised a pay rise when I joined, this has still not happened! I have received a variety of creative excuses as to why this is the case, none of which include the quality of my teaching at the schools they send me to. In fact on many occasions, they have tried to lower my daily rate without discussing it with me but slipping it into an e-mail(in the hope I wouldn’t notice the lowered daily rate) of a job I’d accepted with them.
They have also offered me long term jobs at a rate less then what a newly qualified teacher would get!!! Thankfully I have not been in a financial position where I need to accept these jobs. Exploitative in a word and probably working for less than the minimum wage if you take into account the lack of benefits that you would get if you were employed by the school on the teacher’s pay scale.
How do they get away with it!

Very Very poor service….since last year October i have been battling with them to get a proper job….i recently did a voluntary work with them which was for a week assuring that once you do a week unpaid shift they will get you a paid role immediately …i should have known not to trust them, after the one week all they say is the school have not replied yet blah blah blah…or my consultant is on holiday this that…. i know the job market is tough its best just applying to school direct and hope to get something….DONT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS AGENCY….

I’ve been working for Protocol for just over a year and have been offered work almost every day, even in quiet periods such as the start of term. I have never had to ring them once for work.
The agency seems to be quite popular with schools in my area and I suspect that this is because they have a cheap rate of pay even though the agency take a sizeable chunk.
I have never had any problem or come-back from the agency if I don’t want to return to a school for whatever reason.
My only gripe (apart from pay) is that they regularly offer longer term placements always in ‘wonderful’ schools but I doubt that any of the consultants have ever worked in them. Is this purely based on teacher recommendation as surely this will vary according to an individual’s point of view.
However at my initial interview it was made clear that some schools would not be suited to me personally as we are all different and have different expectations.
As I read in other reviews, the fact that they offer SEN placements is a bonus and they even have free training should you wish to explore this area of education for the first time.
The consultants at the office based in Finchley all address me by name and ask about my well being and satisfaction with work and schools. Thank You Glenn, Nimisha, Michael and Ben, to name but a few who work at there.
Overall I am extremely satisfied with this agency and have plenty of work. They even have a guaranteed work scheme for selected teachers who wish to take it up and may be truly worried about not having enough work.

Started off with good pay, getting great feedback from schools. Strange things started happening when they wanted to lower my pay each job.

They then started to fight dirty when I said I didn’t see why I had to loose money, when the school were telling me that they thought I was doing an outstanding job.

They were ringing the school trying to make deals behind my back and in turn cutting my booking short, as they find others that will do it cheaper if you wont take the lesser amount.

They then play the game of they didnt know anything, they just got feedback that they didnt want you in tomorrow.

Its totally unprofessional and insulting, and no where in their consideration is the progress of the pupils which you have got started on thier GCSE work and enjoying your lessons.

Totally unprofessional, and go downhill when you fight for the money they promised you in the beginning. They use educational jargon to justify everything, they say they are not teachers yet consistently patronise you… horrible.

I registered with them one year ago and they made me pay for another CRB (I already had 2), saying that I will get a refund after 44 days of work, that is, never. During the interview, they asked me if I had experience in Special Needs. When I said that I had no experience at all and that I did not want to do it because I do not have any qualification in that field, they said in a very upset tone “It’s job. Take or leave it. It’s up to you”. After that, they sent me one day to an adult school for disabled people, where they paid me (including travel expenses) 20 pounds for 4 hours or work. Since that moment, I dedided not to work with them, and despite I have made clear more than twice that I do not want to work in SEN, they only call me to offer SEN TA supply roles at almost 9:30 in the morning!! Very unprofessional. Do not waste your time with this agency.

Hi registered with this agency a year ago. They made me pay 44£ for my CRB but they never provided me any work at all as a Secondary Teacher. They just called me to do a cover at a SEN School where I had to clean, wash and do other matters related to nursery or cleaning. When I was already at the School they sent me a text and said that my rate was going to be only the half that day because I was there as a SEN assistant and not as a Teacher (£60 instead of £125/130). I sent them an e-mail and asked when I was going to have my £44 back (something they said in the registration interview) and they said that I needed to work 50 time with them before having my £44 back, that is, never. I will think about taking further actions against this agency or at least, let everybody know what kind of people they really are. They provided me the worst service I ever had. DO NOT REGISTER WITH THEM NOR PAY ANY AGENCY £44 FOR THE CRB/DBS. THIS DO NOT SUPPOSE ANY COST FOR THEM, IT SHOULD BE FREE AND THEY ARE JUST GETTING MONEY FROM WORKIERS.

At the moment it has taken nearly 6 weeks just to get me signed onto the books!! I keep being passed from pillar to post, no one contacts me first regarding my application I always have to contact them to find out how it’s going! They even got me to chase my own references! Apparently now they are still waiting for a form to come back from the council so I am about to give up!

I am £44 down with the CRB form and nothing is moving forward. Very unprofessional people who look at you as a number and not a person. Even when I drove the 30 miles to my nearest office the person dealing with me taking her time and was seen by my friend dancing round the kitchen and talking about X factor when she was meant to be getting me a form to sign!!

Protocol are sometimes reliable, but are often dishonest about rates of pay, trying to reduce one’s wages, and then making endless excuses as to why they are doing this. What company reduces workers’ wages? They treat you generally like a number and the staff seem more concerned with making money off your wages for themselves. However I have worked in some really good schools and the amount of work has been quite good, but you really have to keep calling them to keep getting the work in. The other negative aspect is that Protocol will place you in a school, miles away and expect you to work there for a reduced rate. I’m getting fed up with them and am thinking of leaving for a better paid agency and an agency that doesn’t tell you lies and make excuses.

I changed agencies because I was annoyed about changes in how we were paid, but I realise now I was quite well off where I was. I had been working nearly full time but with Protocol this has dropped dramatically. I only gave them 3 stars for amount of work because I have been unavailable to them quite a bit, but I do wonder how much work I would have got had I been available full time. I suspect not a lot. I was feeling very positive when I signed up with them but it just hasn’t happened. My opinion has slumped since. They asked how much I was paid with the previous agency and, as they didn’t comment, I wrongly assumed that would be matched. It took 6 months of checking what the e-mails said and insisting I received the pay I wanted before that amount was ‘made my default pay’. The web site is awful. Once you’ve been recorded as available on your diary it’s impossible to change it. And the number of e-mails you receive for every day’s pay is ridiculous. My last agency, you did the work and got paid the following Friday. End of story. A real pain. I won’t be working for them much longer.

Started off well but went downhill from there, way downhill! You are not working as part of a team. They don’t care who you are, where you want to work or travel time, you are only a name on a piece of paper. They only care about the chunk of money they are going to skim off your pay cheque (I conversed with many teachers from different agencies, Protocol was the lowest paying by far). They will send you to the worst school in the UK. They offer very little social activities. It’s hit and miss with contacting the agency and I’ve had a struggle from day one trying to get in touch with my consultant. Messages never get passed on to people in this agency, it’s seems like it’s very poorly organised. Do yourself a favour, go with a different agency!!!!

I have dealt with this agency recently and very disappointed with the attitude towards my requirements, This is a shame as I initially had a favourable impression of them, however I then realised I was being misled. I have worked in education for 7 years and pride myself in my communication skills and professionalism and after the call I received today and the needless abuse I received over the phone by a very pushy consultant who thinks he knows it all and who spoke to me in a very disrespectful manner and behaived in a dishonest fashion, to say the least it was shocking experience for me! I will certainly not be using this company to represent me going forward and strongly recommend teachers to look around elsewhere before using this agency.

I came from Canada with another agency, and Protocol is the ONLY reason I’m still in the UK. I have never had problems finding enough work through Protocol, but I also do my share of the work. I get up early so at 7am I’m completely ready when I call in – though this happens less and less since I’m now being asked for by schools and pre booked well in advance.

About their rate of pay – yes there are other places that pay more… I worked for 5 agencies at once and all paid more than Protocol, but none got me half the work Protocol did. Also, once you’ve worked for them for awhile, ask for a raised – it worked for me!

Like any agency, they’re a business making money. Be firm with them and call in every morning and you’ll be all set. Tell them your limits of travel or which areas you won’t go to, and they’ll respect that.

I got work everyday and got into the role that I wanted full time within 10 days! When I went into the office to meet Protocol staff they were very professional and were very patient and listened to my needs (I was in there and hour more than I was meant to be there). Came here, like others with promise of reliable work. Jumped through all of their hoops. They’ve taken my CRB check money both in UK and for Canada and have never offered work. They have too many offices and not one of them knows what the other is doing. Made my stay here as a highly experienced teacher from Canada a most upsetting and frustrating one. So happy other agencies I get work from are professional, honest and decent folk. Stay away from this one and don’t believe a word they say to you as they lure try to you over from other countries; not sure what monetary gain they get but they must get something for signing up teachers.

I had a terrible experience working with Protocol. I initially worked through another agency when I first arrived in the UK from Canada. I signed up with Protocol because I was worried about having enough work in London. I only worked for them 4 times, at fairly good schools, but the one thing that really turned me off was their staff. I was called for work one morning and they asked if I could go to NW London (I lived SW) and when I told them it was going to take me 1.5+hrs to get to the school the consultant freaked out and yelled at me. It’s their job to know where I live – I couldn’t make the trains run any faster!! Anyway, that was the last time I took a call from them and I continued to work for my other agency. They actually took the time to get to know me! My advice, don’t bother with Protocol, with them you’re just another number!

This review is about Protocol in Bristol:
They guarantee you specific amount of hours work. They promised I would have enough work to live a descent life in the UK then gave me work 3 times only in six months. I feel extremely disappointed, as they promised me I could be working 3 days. There was always an excuse for the lack of work. They still advertise on their site that they need teachers! How come? Do not go there. They are liars. They ruin people’s lives.

I completed a ‘contract’ for Protocol in Cambridge the last academic year in a well known, further educational institution.
I am a very experienced, skilled and qualified lecturer andm I’ve never know anything like it.

I encountered one of the rudest women in my teaching career, she was the departmental administrator and would not ‘administrate’. She pulled faces at everyone, was bluntly rude back and refused to help you with any requests. I got so fed up with it as it hampered my abilty to deliver as a teacher. I complained, again and again to the manager who defended her and laughed it off (clearly something more there for thsi to be ignored and accepted). This was no laughing matter. On my first day I was left sat with her and she made racist remarks, she took the p*** out of the manager on the phone in front of me and runned down several people who were obviously memmbers of staff. I kept complaining, but nothing. The manager told me if I needed help to track her down, but she wasnt always there and it came to the point where I would avoid going into the office with this rude administrator to avoid it.

Eventually, I got so fed up and contacted Protocol ‘the issue was taken up’ by a ‘regional manager ‘ as the useless and mostly absent coordinator never responsed to my emails and let me down on arranged meetings. (I driove all the way to Cambridge one day and got a phone call half way there). I never, ever got a response.

What did happen next was disgraceful. I sent emails to both managers within the college and protocol to establish final teaching dates at the end of term and arrangements and never got replies. I had to find out dates from my actual students!!! They told me when to finish! I then discovered the formal contractual end date was earlier than the students were told to study until (July) and because I am an ethical, responsible tutor, I still taught them beyond my contract.

At the end of term, the manager in the college politically played a game of cat and mouse to keep me in the loop while she looked for another tutor (in case she had nobody). My job was advertised all over the internet whilst doing this! She clearly didn’t like the fact I had complained to Protocol about the administrator and gone ‘over her head’. The fact I was reliable, arranged extra classes for exam tuition near exam times (something other tutors did not do) and got good results from my students didnt matter a jot.

I havent heard from Protocol since nor have I been offered any further work after my hard work, efforts and reliability.

So my advice is AVOID both working in Cambridge and for Protocol. I had been warned about Protocol being very unethical many years ago, and they have a bad reputation in education as part of a new trend that has contributed to lower standards.
They continously break employment laws and do not ensure their staff are trained and given the basic tools when they arrive at work(no computer training, health and safety) I got none! I never knew where the staff room was and was never shown!
The fact a complaint regarding racist comments and abusive comemnts regarding people was laughed off and also, not taken seriously by protocol, tells you everything.

The College is also one to avoid. The department I worked in constantly advertises for sessional staff -always a clue.

I can’t speak for rate of pay or quality of schools because I never got that far with them. I submitted my CV, called, and even went all the down to their office, walked right in, asked to meet with someone (who was very polite and seemed attentive and personable), but NEVER HEARD BACK from them again. I know I have excellent credentials (so that is not the issue), but they never even took the time to get back to me to even say, there is nothing available or we don’t have anything for you, nothing! That seems very unprofessional to me. Other agencies I have contacted responded immediately and set me up with work (even when there wasn’t something available directly related to what I wanted, they found me something temporary until something better came up), either way, they responded and acknowledged my effort.

This agency is not to be trusted. I was in contact with them over a period of two years before I moved to the UK. I moved from a permanent full time position in Australia into a recession with the illusion(fed by this agency that I would have five days of work per week in Oxford) I almost sold my house in Australia but it did not sell in time for me to move.

I took all of my possessions, my car and my pet to be called in by Protocol as an assistant teacher(on a low wage) or to monitor exams for half a day, or to work at the most violent schools in Oxfordshire. I have three degrees from one of the top universities in Australia and fifteen years of teaching experience and they treated me like this! Seventy thousand dollars later and after a nervous breakdown I found a full time teaching job in Australia via the net and flew back into a teaching job in Australia.

    Do not trust this agency.

I can’t believe some of the positive reviews on this site. Have you guys got ANY idea how much this agency cream off your wage PER hour or day? I earned £189 a day when payed directly by schools for supply and that was 5 years ago. I’m only using this agency under sufferance now as the school I am working at on a temporary bases will only employ temporary staff through this agency. In my experience Protocol do almost nothing for their money – punch a national insurance number into a payroll software program and that’s about it! They won’t even give you a printed payslip without charging £5 (per slip!!!!!!). I’m English so I don’t know how non nationals get teaching jobs here but my advice to you is find out how and skip the agencies (or this one anyway). In one school I worked in we employed Canadians and Ausies not through an agency. The candidates had telephone interviews that’s about all I know. Look at http://www.tes.co.uk where all schools advertise their jobs and contact them directly. Best time is probably in the summer term when any British teacher can’t apply as its too late to hand in their notice to their current employer.

They booked me for a day’s work. When I turned up to work it turned out it was an INSET Day and I was not needed. When I asked the school about pay they said to talk to the agency. The agency had no interest in pursuing the school for my wages even though the school was at fault for not cancelling the booking. As a result I didn’t work for them again as they clearly have no interest in looking after their teachers so be wary: You may find yourself passing up other work, shelling out your own money for transport and then turning up to a school that forgot to cancel. If you do, Protocol will have no interest in looking after you.

I am an overseas trained teacher and Protocol was extremely helpful getting me to the UK. Once there the lack of work I received was very stressful. There was always an excuse for the lack of work. I struggled for money until I joined a new agency. Also the rate of pay was much lower than other agencies.

I signed up with Protocol sometime in May 2011 while I was still in Canada. The Canadian consultants were fantastic! Once I got to England, everything seemed different. The consultants seemed un-professional, and I was not getting any work. I arrived in September and it is now December and I have had 1 day of work from Protocol.

I found out that this agency didn’t even have a consultant working for the area that they were responsible for, for the past 3 months. They never informed us about this, leaving us in the dark as we struggle to live and pay bills after moving to a different country.

This experience has made me hate and disrespect this country and the way they treat their teachers. I hate that this is what has happened and I am counting the days until I can fly home to a normal caring country!

This agency is responsible for a vast amount of heartache in my life on all levels. I felt like a puppet on a string. They promised I would have enough work to live a comfortable life in the UK then gave me hardly enough work to survive,

I joined tow other agencies in order to get enough work. The schools they placed me in were nothing short of hellish. I left a very good permanent job in Australia in order to take up work in the UK. These people are very irresponsible and nothing short of used car salesmen. I recommend that all teachers steer clear of this agency.

This is my first time doing supply after a maternity cover contract came to an end and I have been really impressed by Protocol Education.

My contact at the office is extremely positive and encouraging and I was offered an interview and subsequently a long term supply contract starting the very next day my previous contract had ended.

Whilst I would have preferred slightly more information and knowledge about the school I was being sent to, after being here a little while it is clear that was more on the school’s side than the agency’s.

They have been in constant (sometimes slightly annoyingly :o) constant) contact throughout the recruitment process and I get the feeling that if you are a teacher who is interested in actually doing a job of work and not just sitting there with your feet up then I recommend this agency highly.

I was recruited out of a very well paid permanent teaching position at one of the best schools in Australia. I arrived in England to find that I was given barely enough work to survive. Protocol endlessly recruit more staff than are needed. Teachers have a terrible like in the UK as a result of this.

I moved back to Austraila after four months of hell which almost cost me vast amount of money and a very good job in Australia.

Working for Protocol has been incredibly frustrating to say the least! I have been with them for well over a year and have only been given one day of work in that time. The first year I found myself a part time job so wasn’t to worried when I never heard from them but I have needed them in the past few months and they have definitely fallen short. I ring them daily and never get called up for work. Last week alone I rang asking for my consultant at least 6 times (not counting emails) and he never once phoned me back. Another girl and I both believe there is a lot of favourtism going on in the office- menaing only people who are really friendly with the agents get work! I have spoken to other teachers from the agency who seem to receive some work but are also unhappy with the amount of jobs. I don’t know how else to increase my chances of work with them. With full availability I expect more! Be wary when joining.

Before leaving for the UK I was promised there would be loads of supply work in the Hertfordshire / Bedfordshire area – especially for an experienced high school teacher like myself. The rep I met was so enthusiastic about it. No such work came to fruition. Instead I had no option but to take nursery and year 1 – 6 primary classes to get by. I got 3 days in high schools in six months. No more than about 30 days total.

The one time I was late for work due to traffic conditions I was chastised by the head of the branch. This was the same guy who couldn’t turn up my initial arrival appointment and sent another consultant instead. This treatment is not what you need when you arrive in a foreign country expecting work to pay the rent. My advice is, forget supply work, go for short term contracts and apply directly to schools. I found a one year contract position in a decent school on my own and had a much more enjoyable experience and was paid a decent yearly salary without having to worry if the phone won’t ring.

I signed up with this agency before I moved to the UK and found that once I got there I needed to sign up with another 2 just to pay the bills and rent. They kept telling me that there was a lot of work however I was lucky if I got 2 days a week. However they kept hiring new people while there was not enough work for the ones that already were employed. Also, once I had informed them that I was leaving becuase I was being offered a full time job in another country they did not contact me anymore for work even though I was still available for 3 weeks. Also, they never once sent me a thank you or good luck. I thought that was very unprofessional of them.

I worked for the North London branch for 3 years. They are a brilliant agency, friendly consultants, lots of work.
I am a support staff not a teacher and overall I think there is more work for support staff than for teachers.
My only criticism about them is that I had no pay rise for 3 years! Since our pay includes holiday pay, the holiday entitlement was raised, the minimum wage is raised year by year (it’s going up in October again),it’s a disgrace they don’t follow them. My patience is running out until I say something or look for a different agency.

Th ey gave me 2 hours at a school saying that the school had asked specifically for me. I was then offered a full day by another agency but turned it down because i had already promised to go to the school who had, after all, asked for me. Whilst at the school I noticed they needed somebody for a full day this Friday. The PE staff told me to tell the person in charge of cover I was available. She said she had already booked somebody! Very strange! Who is telling the truth? Having worked at the school several times over the last 10 years i know they are satisfied with my work.
Definitely the WORST agency and I have been doing supply for the past 12 years. This is also the worst year ever.

I have been registered with Protocol for 2 years and their service is very inconsistent.
The first year was good as expected, consultants were keen to find bookings – and were always checking how work was going. However as time went on the bookings stopped and the consultants became increasingly rude.
I have sent emails requesting work and get NO response. I recently rang a different branch to find work and was transferred from branch to branch for over 20 minutes. I was then told that they would call me back and they didn’t.

Consultants appear friendly but sadly they have no understanding of how schools operate from the view point of a teacher. They simply want to make bookings to make up their numbers. They do not think about the suitability of the teacher to a particular class/school and once a teacher is in a school they don’t act on any concerns the teacher has.

Protocol Education started off as a brilliant agency when I signed up at home in Australia. The staff were friendly and efficient. However, when I got to the UK, the people in the office were unprofessional and the first thing my consultant said to me was that he would start me on 115 pounds a day. He was so unprofessional and kept repeating himself. Not a good sales man, that’s for sure. From that day on, I registered with other agencies as I didn’t want to settle for such little pay. Protocol calls me all the time asking me to work for them, even if I say I’m booked out for the week, they annoyingly call me most mornings. They also went to the extent of calling my partner, saying they couldn’t get hold of me, when I had spoken to them that morning. Obviously they don’t update their availability once they talk to you and just continue to text and email me about jobs that I’m not qualified for or even interested in (e.g. SEN). Most teachers I talk to say they are rubbish. I hate to be negative about the whole company, as some of the staff have been really helpful and I am sure they do their job well, but the consultant for West London is appalling.

The Consultant I work for in this agency is totally unprofessional, overfamilar and at times dishonest. She booked me for a school on a Training Day and on another occasion told me a course was cancelled for the Monday at 4.35 on the Friday night saying, “have I told you it’s cancelled?” implying she knew earlier in the day but had forgotten to tell me.
Several other Supply teachers feel the same as me about this woman – the other Consultants are probably ok.

I worked for Protocol for a year several years ago, after I completed my PGCE. At that time, I was never without work so when I moved to London last October, Protocol were the first agency that I contacted. However, times have changed and with budgets cut, work has been thin. To date, I have worked 38 days in London and Protocol have provided me with 25% of the work. They have been friendly, honest and always check on my availability with good communication between both parties.

I work for the Cambridge office and they have been brilliant. As I work for them whilst studying for a degree with the Open University, I’ve not wanted to work full time, but there is often enough work available to be full time if I wish. The pay is pretty standard for my level of experience and qualifications, (which, as a nursery nurse isn’t fabulous anyway) and the nurseries I’ve worked in have been okay (a couple of nice ones but mainly big chain ones which I don’t love so much…) but that’s just how it is! The ladies in the office are lovely…the only thing I’d like to improve is the amount of CPD – the courses are few and far between.

I would not recommend anyone work through Protocol. I had the most awful experience with them when I first arrived in London. The women at the main office were rude and unhelpful. They tried to make me pay for a second CRB form even though it was clearly their fault that it went ‘missing’ in the first place. If you choose to work through Protocol you are choosing to be ‘just a number’. The pay is poor and non negotiable, basically I dont know why anyone would choose to work for them and give them such a massive cut of their pay when there are so many other fantastic agencies to work for.

I have been with Protocol for just under two years and have no problems with them to date. The staff are always very friendly and make me feel valued not just a way for them to get bookings in schools. I have been very lucky so far in the amount of work they have given me and have worked for most of the weeks I have been available. I do sometimes get offered work even if I am not available through other commitments and then feel guilty if I have to say no as I feel I am letting them down!

The reason for the lower score on rate of pay is that although my daily rate is quite good, I have had a couple of times where I was on a higher rate and then it was dropped for the same school, which when you have been used to a rate and are expected to go in for a lower rate is slightly annoying to say the least.

However overall a good agency and for my part the office I work through have friendly and helpful staff

You can always call and know that you will hear a friendly caring voice on the other end. I worked for a few other agencies and Protocol is very organized. Unfortunately my experience with this agency is quite negative.
Firstly, the amount of work is really low. I do understand that this isn’t up to them, however, working only one day p.m is an optimistic option.
Secondly, my daily paid was cut down £20 p.d. without informing me. This incident as well as the approach of the consultants to this mattre were deeply upsetting.
Thirdly, I have to relay on the public transport, what I made really clearly during my registration process. Couple of times, when I stuck in the traffic on my way to school (I leave in Birmingham) I was called by consultant complaining “are you still there?” “but, you said on interview that you have a car”.
Last but not list, in order to get a job, I have to call them every single morning updating about my availability for work that so far they can’t find for me.
Sorry for sharing this sad experience.
And I wish all of you good luck!

An excellent agency – I have so appreciated the efforts made by consultants at protocol to find my regular suitable work (and also honesty at the times of year there was very little available). Support to get started, from before I even arrived in the UK, was incredible and made such a difference in making a smooth transition into working. I wasn’t being offered work with Protocol. I was lucky to be working 3 days a week when I had full time availability. The work I was getting I was receiving a phone call after 8am and having to travel over an hour to get to the schools so I was rushed to get to schools on time and having no time to review the days plan.

Protocol was my first teaching agency so I wasn’t sure what to expect. While planning to move to the UK, we received excellent information about what needed to be done and when. I had a good interview with a protocol representative who really outlined what the company was about. I felt comfprtable knowing this agency had a long history which for me meant it was trustworthy. We arrived in the UK and within 3 days we were in contact with the representatives. We had an excellent “welcome cruise” on the thames river which was a great start! The head office is very reachable and has loads of resources and free internet! The courses they offer are also very informative. I have had no issues with this agency! I am 100% satisfied!

*The only thing I was a bit disapointed with was that we had to manoeuvre our way from the airport to our destination with all our luggage (in my case 4 suitcases totally 200lbs!)on our first day here. It would be nice to have protocol arrange something to assist us in finding where we need to go.

Very helpful and friendly with getting me over here. Unfortunately, the amount of work they used to lure me over with has not panned out. For a while, I was only getting work (maybe 2 days a week) as a TA at half the pay. Gone 2-weeks at a time, calling in, with no work available. Not necessarily their fault, but incredibly inconvenient when I was led to believe I could be working up to 5 days a week.

Have been signed up with Protocol for several months now and been given a total of five days of work. Every week they informed me that for whatever reason ( ‘it’s the beginning of the term’ ‘there have been cuts’ ) there wasn’t much work available and it was ‘just about to pick up exponentially’ come the next week. They do not contact you at all with work and ask you to phone in every morning at 7 to state your availability: and then if there’s no work they don’t call back to tell you. The work I have done has been enjoyable, but I would not recommend this company.

I work with the cambridge office. I came in from overseas. The overseas team are awesome. When i arrived in cambridge, their service there is second to none. My consultant, sara is so helpful and friendly. She has assisted with all sorts of things, not just work. Even helped me find accommodation and items i needed to buy. I even rang her on a saturday evening when i was lost and she asked what i could see then worked out where i was and talked me through the directions back to city centre and stayed on the line until i felt safe again.

She kept me informed every step of the way with regards to which school she was approaching on my behalf. She arranged a couple of interview for long term work but in the interim gave me daily work. Then i secured a long term post but she calls me every week or so to see how everything is.

I wouldnt ever use another agency and recommend protocol to anyone.

Coming over to the UK I was told that I should not worry about getting enough work as that I would most likely have between 4 and 5 days a week. After getting over here I had much of the same problem as the two people from Manchester, but with a different branch. Most weeks I was lucky to get even 3 days a week, and I constantly worried about making rent. I would work in the Nurseries for 9 hour days to make sure that I would make rent each month. The reason I put so low on honesty was because of the promise of moving over for full time work, and many times we caught consults fibbing (telling one person one thing, and another supply teacher another). This was especially annoying as a group of us lived together and were constantly aware of the inconsistencies.

The Quality of the schools are pretty good, and the pay is pretty decent. Be aware though that you do have to travel sometimes up to 2 hours each way to get to a school. The staff is very approachable and do try to help whenever possible.

It’s just really frustrating moving from another Country prepared for one experience, and being delivered a completely different one.

I have to agree with the other person from the Manchester office. I had registered with Protocol before moving to Manchester which was great bc they were helpful in setting up bank accounts and everything. However for the first 2 months they were good at getting me daily supply even a short term placement (however not as a teacher) but it was a great school and great staff.
However, I do feel that you are just a number to them and that they probably take on more teachers than they actually need… After the first few months I was getting less calls unless I began annoying them with showing up at the office, phonecalls and email then all of a sudden they just had an opening…
So if you would like to sign up with them particulary the Manchester office sign up also with another agency… just my advice

I have had a good experience with Protocol. They were really supportive when I had trouble initially coming to grips with the London supply teacher experience, and the international coordinator in particular really cared about how I was settling in – I felt like they really wanted me to be successful. Certain branches produce more work for teachers than others, but because they are such a large company teachers are free to work through more than one office in the city if their local office is having a slow week. I’ve been to some tough schools, but that’s not down to the agency – that’s London. There are lots of great schools too, and Protocol is really good about getting you in the Year groups you like best. I would recommend Protocol!

Protocol is an outstanding teaching agency. I came to them from another (poor) agency, a bit discouraged. I had work in my field/subject/age range the very next day and consistently since then.

The staff are amazing to deal with and throw the best social events. Protocol is a proper agency with a wide variety of quality schools that are never more than 30-40 minutes away from your home.

Protocol found me a full time teaching placement (essentially my dream job) within a month of signing up with them and I’ve been at the school for over a year now.

I have nothing negative to say about them! I would highly recommend Protocol to anyone.

I have mixed feelings about Protocol. I have worked for the Manchester branch for about a year and though many of them can leave you feeling like they are really working for you, others make you feel like you’re just another way of getting money for them.

They can be very inconsistent with the amount of work they get you, and though this isn’t necessarily their fault, as it depends on the schools who use them, I also feel like they must definitely have too many teachers working for them if there isn’t enough work to go around. It is a very stressful feeling not knowing if you’ll be able to pay rent at the end of the month and I wish they would work harder for me, or not hire on new teachers until everyone who is already hired is getting work consistently.

The rate of pay is fairly good, but could be better, especially when asking you to travel over 3 hours return on public transport to get to some schools.

I was impressed by the quality of schools that they have sent me to. Also, they are always honest about what the school is like when you ask them, though they don’t always offer this information up without being prompted. They are also good about not sending you back to schools that you feel uncomfortable with. They don’t usually question you much about this and seem understanding if a school/class is just not working out for you.

If it wasn’t for the amount of work I’ve been getting, I would be singing more of their praises, but if you’re not getting more than 2 days a week, then something is definitely wrong. I recommend them, but sign up with more than one agency if you want to survive financially!

I registered with Protocol before I left Australia and it made it so much easier for when I arrived. I had a meeting organised for me before I left and the London team helped me with all of my paperwork – I got a bank account, National Insurance number (which you need) and all the other stuff. I started working a week after I arrived and the consultants in the London office are great in contacting me for work. They also get you involved in meeting other teachers which is great (as I am travelling by myself)!

I am now in a longer block of work with Protocol at a school I originally did some casual days at. They still contact me regularly to touch base and say hi and invite me to teacher events (I just did ice-skating for the first time…)!

My rate of pay is good and the consultants in the London office really make it fun. I taught a few days with another agency I was registered with, but once I started teaching through Protocol I didn’t look back. I can’t recommend them highly enough

Protocol Education overall is a very decent teaching agency. The rate of pay is quite good, and are very helpful and friendly whenever making contact with them. I have had a few issues with getting paid as they sometimes do not receive time sheets. Another thing that is good about Protocol is that it has many agents that try to get you work according to where you are living. For example, living in East London, you could get work in the East, West, or even Essex. The school qualities are also very decent, again, it just depends what area you are living in and how far you are willing to travel to work. It is possible to get pre-bookings while doing daily supply, but it is not the norm. More work could be given however, and I recommend working with more than one agency.
