GSL Education

| November 25, 2010 | 24 Comments

“GSL Education is the culmination of many years of dedicated service to education. GSL was born out of a need to improve education services for young people in the local area. In 1990 the founder of GSL started the Keen Students School (KSS) to address low academic achievement amongst young people in the East of London.

Out of this experience, GSL Education was founded in 2000 to provide schools in Central and Greater London with teachers, teaching assistants, office support workers and IT technicians.

We see education recruitment as an active way to directly influence the quality ofeducation for London’s young people, and we take our responsibility seriously.”

This agency is exploitative and determined to bully supply teachers into taking placements at extremely low rates of pay. It’s interesting that as part of their PR on their website, they mention their founder’s philanthropic ventures. Wonderful, apart from the fact that his philanthropy needs to extend to proper pay and respectful treatment of supply teachers on zero hour contracts who work for him. Where has his philanthropy gone to in this regard?

They were nice, when I first met them.
However, they set me up a trial day at a school for a science technician role, they promised that it was going to be a long-term role, on that basis I agreed.
When, I got to the school, it was mediocre, I found out that it wasn’t a long-term position and I was just there for supply, whilst they’re doing interviews for someone who is long term, I found this out from the staff.
I also didn’t like the way the school were treating me, the staff were impolite, and was also as if I was just supply, so I left, I then received a very rude call from the agency, and they then said that the school needed me on that day, they basically used my trial day as supply.

Really impressed with the rate of work i have had at the moment. I must admit that it was slow abit getting the roles but then again it all depends on the schools and if they want/wanted a cover teacher/supervisor.

I have been extremely happy with the service I have received from GSL. I regularly get work from them and most of the work is locally based so travelling is very easy. The staff at GSL are very helpful, friendly and professional and always provide proper and accurate information for the tasks I am offered.
I have been with GSL for over 3 years and I always had a very professional and friendly relationship with them and I would recommend anybody who seek work to contact GSL and experience their professionalism and service.
I have been with various agents but I say GSL have been the best so far.

    nice people but:
After registration and paying for a CRB, they offered only one day supply work : i thought it was a normal teacher supply, but after the day they told me I could get only the half pay (£60), because I did not teach I was ONLY a kind of cover supervisor.
Of course they did not tell me when I asked about it when they offered the job….
    NEVER AGAIN!

A thing I particularly like since I started working with GSL Education is that I have been feeling as a part of team that blend well together and working smoothly, which boosts my confidence and feel-good factor at work.

They are meticulous and punctual but at the same time warm and friendly, showing plenty of faith in me and my competence, always well-prepared to provide me with all I need before I get to a workplace.

I was given regular work as a cover supervisor and, initially, as an invigilator during the late stages of the last school season, since I joined GSL that is, so I am pleased and am looking forward to a lot more this season, starting as of tomorrow.

When I first joined GSL the amount of work available wasn’t as much as I had anticipated, but as time progressed and becoming more comfortable with the routine there seemed to be no lack of jobs required of me. At times I even had to reject some offers due to my already busy schedule. The pay is standard and being a small agency I was not expecting bags of money to be thrown at me. As for schools, there are obviously ones that are more rowdy than others, but being able to handle the different levels of behaviour is pretty much part of the job description. The staff at the school treat me with the respect due and that for me is enough.
The staff at GSL are amiable and they provide a good service.

My experience of GSL has been entirely positive, from the moment the agency contacted me after reading my CV on a professional register. The first interview was thorough and references from previous employers were obligatory. Also, GSL commissioned the CRB check themselves, rather than rely on earlier documents gained by other employers. Because of this I would say they can be relied upon to provide staff who have the necessary credentials and reliability that head teachers need for their schools and colleges. As an employee, I am impressed with the guidance GSL staff provide as soon as a booking is made, backing up phone calls with texts giving directions and transport suggestions, along with the full address and contact details. Staff are friendly and supportive and I have already recommended the agency to some of my friends who also teach. I have been sent to a wide variety of schools, but always within a sensible travelling distance. By ensuring that their supply staff are local, GSL enables schools to get to know their supply teachers, and the teachers build up a rapport with the schools and their pupils. This takes some of the uncertainty out of supply teaching and ensures that students and staff can relax, knowing that their supply teachers know their way around, are familiar with the school’s protocol and can concentrate on delivering the best teaching possible with the minimum of problems.

Having previous been part of GSL Education I can sadly confirm that the above reviews are true.
Their main objectives is to get the maximum amount of candidates registered on their books. Each agent had targets to meet in terms of registration and therefore they would promise you lots of work, and get your hopes raised. As soon as you have paid the CBR and are registered they really could not care less. All of their adverts on the website are fake and do not exist as they do NOT have that many vacancies.
Its very sad how they abuse people and give people false hopes about finding work. Bottom line is AVOID at all cost. there are much more decent agencies out there people.

I must state that GSL team has been wonderful since the registration day. The staff is friendly and supportive, trying their best to find you exactly what you asked for. To be honest, I haven’t really need to register with another agency. They have sent me constantly to good schools and they have good rates. You obviously need to wake up early and let them know you are available, but if you are doing a great job at the school, you will be booked again. I do not mind travelling to go to certain schools if I know it’s worth it! And it does, trust me! I am really happy working with them, our communication is excellent and I hope we will continue collaborating! Thank you GSL for your business!

GSL have been excellent at providing me with work during the busy times and fairly good in the quieter times. Mostly I have been sent out to schools close to where I live which is great but also on the odd day I have been sent out a bit further out. They’re clearly working with a lot of schools and in different areas so I’m sure they can find many schools close to where the teachers they work with are living. Overall I believe they are an agency you can be absolutely happy with, the staff are professional and friendly and lots of work close to home :)

I have been very happy with GSL. Work has flowed superbly for me and I find the staff very friendly and easy to talk to. I have 2 agencies. But this time round doing supply work I did not even tell the second agency I was available, as GSL were brilliant in getting me work. And to top it off, I love the fact GSL get me schools which are in walking distance for me. Travel cost = great! Plus means timing is also really good in the morning for me. I have been extremely happy with GSL and I feel it is a dynamic team who do their best to work between the schools and (us) the teaching staff. I don’t feel like a number, but a valid person with GSL, which I think is a wonderful trait of theirs. Appreciation is always mentioned and responses always take place for any contact I make.

They have a rather superior attitude and evidently rather fancy themselves. Some of them can be rude and abrupt on the phone and talk down to you which I find quite irritating. They will often contact you with work which is impossible to get to and if you tell this to them they will become really snotty about it and refuse to give you any more work. There are far better agencies out there.

Firstly, thank you for all of your comments and feedback! We are constantly taking things on board and looking to improve our service and do appreciate your time.

    In response to some feedback
•We are a non-switchboard agency and for this reason have never had hold music installed on our telephone systems
•The phone is never left unattended as our office opening hours are from 7am until 5.30pm within Term time. Your call will always be answered.
•GSL pride ourselves in being up-do-date as a Quality Mark Agency on work permit legislation, all registrations are fully vetted within a maximum of 3 weeks (providing a new CRB application is not required). Perhaps these particular comments may have been written about a different agency as we have very strict policies we adhere to on this front
•I would like to address the point about the location and travel time mentioned. When anybody comes into register, we do a full interview report to record the areas each candidate wishes to work, and the time length each would travel per morning. We are a very consultative and would always run any journey by you to ensure that you are happy with it. We aim to keep teachers within their area unless they are happy to travel. It is clear if the candidate did write about our agency specifically, that this must have held no issue at the time if they did indeed accept this booking. We do apologise for any inconvenience the booking may have caused you
•On another comment it mentions that we are biased sending out female workers, this is certainly not the case as our many male workers will attest. Perhaps it is that our clients (for continuity purposes) often like to have back specific people (who coincidentally happened to be a female at the time) that this misconception had been formed. This would explain why some people are out working everyday in quiet periods. We do try at every opportunity to send out new candidates so that they may benefit from developing similar relationships with our clients– often starting with smaller length bookings that are available
•GSL Education pride ourselves on professionalism and delivering the best possible service. We treat our staff well and deal with any concerns as soon as possible. Our E-mail accounts are always active and we would not block any user without a very good reason
•Likewise, we never knowingly ‘spread information’ on the internet regarding our candidates personal information as this would breach the Data protection Act – any complaint over this matter we take extremely seriously and await further communication if you wish to contact us regarding this allegation
•We do try our utmost to champion the interests of all our candidates and present them with work opportunities, however volume of work does fluctuate and we do always recommend candidates to be proactive in registering with one or more agencies to ensure that they always have work coming in

I would like to conclude, by saying that you are very welcome to contact Louise Latter or myself, Rachel Galsworthy to speak to us directly. Thank you very much.

The agency as much as they may seem like they are attempting to help you find the best opportunity possible, that is far from the case!!! The time I was with the agency I never had practically any work. They took my information from my registration and spread it across the internet. I felt like there was no confidentiality and after several emails asking for this information to be removed, they blocked my emails as a response! I am disgusted in their approach and hope others listen!!!

It is rather difficult maintaining a dialogue with them; when you phone up in the morning, mostly you just listen to canned music for 5 minutes, then to be told that nobody is available. Someone should also tell them that British passport holders do not need work permits; my registration was held up for months because of this.

Firstly I disagree with the hash statements of the previous reviewer! I have worked for quiet a few agencies and have had mixed experiences of them. GSL has friendly staff they know who you are the minute you answer the phone and try to place you close to home which is great. I personally get a bit annoyed with the comments on here about not getting consistent work. Are these people being proactive? I find that if you just sit back on your laurels you don’t deserve to get work. I keep a constant dialogue with this agency and they are one of two agencies I am registered with that actually get work instead of empty promises! They are good for day supply but find other agencies for long term!

This teaching agency have only one agenda – to make money for themselves. They gave me assignments which were ridiculously far and hours which always ended up that I was getting less than minimum wage. They offered me a full day at a far school; when I said that would require me to leave for 5:45am, their response was that ‘everyone has to do early morning starts sometimes’. This would have meant I would actually have had a 12 hour day if you included my travel to and from the school and would have only got paid £60..less than minimum wage of you count my expenses. Needless to say I declined. Don’t bother with this agency.
